Holistic Interactions of Shallow Clouds, Aerosols, and Land-Ecosystems (HI-SCALE): Nano-Particle Number Concentrations

28 August 2016 - 26 September 2016

Lead Scientist: Susanne Hering

Observatory: sgp, sgp

During the second Hi-SCALE intensive, (August 28-September 26, 2016) we plan to deploy two newly developed nanoparticle water-based condensation particle counters (nano-WCPC). These nano-WCPC measure the number concentration of airborne particles as small as 1nm or 2nm based on activation of growth via water condensation. One instrument will sample directly from the ambient air to provide total number concentrations. The second nano-WCPC will serve as a detector for nano-scanning mobility particle spectrometer (nano-SMPS) particle sizing system being deployed by Dr. Chongai Kuang of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This combined data set will enable identification of particle nucleation events, and enable examination of particle growth rates during these events.
