The Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer Optimal Estimation value-added product (AERIoe VAP) is now available in evaluation mode for the following four field campaigns conducted by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility:
- the 2017–2018 Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in the Eastern North Atlantic (ACE-ENA) campaign in the Azores (please see the note about ACE-ENA data below)
- the 2017–2018 Measurements of Aerosols, Radiation, and Clouds over the Southern Ocean (MARCUS) campaign between Australia and Antarctica
- the 2018–2019 Cloud, Aerosol, and Complex Terrain Interactions (CACTI) campaign in Argentina’s Sierras de Córdoba mountain range
- the 2019–2020 Cold-Air Outbreaks in the Marine Boundary Layer Experiment (COMBLE) in northern Norway.
Note: The data from ACE-ENA’s June–July 2017 and January–February 2018 intensive observational periods are part of a larger AERIoe data set for ARM’s Eastern North Atlantic (ENA) atmospheric observatory. The new ENA data, which are from June 2017 through March 2018, are now available.
AERIoe provides boundary-layer profiles of temperature and water vapor mixing ratio and liquid cloud retrievals. This VAP helps retrieve profiles in both clear and cloudy conditions so users can better understand the processes occurring in the boundary layer.
One advantage of AERIoe is the high temporal resolution of the thermodynamic profile retrievals in the boundary layer. These retrievals provide new information about the boundary layer’s evolution, which is difficult to measure. Another benefit of AERIoe is that its liquid water path retrievals in optically thin clouds allow for better quantification of microphysical properties in clouds such as shallow cumuli.
AERIoe ran at 20-second temporal resolution for the ENA and CACTI, but at 5 minutes for MARCUS and COMBLE to provide timelier retrievals.
