dlprof-wind > Doppler Lidar Horizontal Wind ProfilesVAP Type(s) > Baseline

The Doppler Lidar Wind value-added product (DLPROF-WIND VAP) calculates profiles of horizontal winds from plan position indicator (PPI) scans that are performed several times per hour. These wind measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer are particularly important for modeling pollutant and aerosol transport.

DLPROF-WIND processes each PPI scan acquired during a given day to produce time- and height-resolved measurements of horizontal winds. The height resolution of the output is 26 meters, and profiles are reported once every 15 minutes. Each wind profile scan takes approximately 40 seconds to complete. Thus, the wind profiles represent 40-second “snapshots” taken once every 15 minutes.

In addition to the wind measurements, the VAP also provides estimates of the random uncertainty in wind speed and direction. These uncertainties provide a useful metric for quality control of the wind measurements.
